Old
West Movie Poster Museum at the Flamingo Hotel
|
|
Welcome to our western movie poster
museum dedicated to the history of Western filmmaking in Arizona.
1952, during the heyday of Western filming, the Flamingo Hotel Tucson
was built by Del Webb, the contractor who had just built the original
Flamingo Hotel in Las Vegas for Bugsy Segal.
In that era, many of the Stars, cast and crew stayed at this hotel
during movie filming as it was the newest in town at that time and
was close to Old
Tucson Studios. Notable hotel guests included John Wayne, Gene
Autry, Rudy Vallee, Bing Crosby, Elvis Presley, The Stones, The
Hollies, The Byrds and many others.
(The hotel was fully remodeled in 1995).
In the "Old West Movie" era, spectacular and colorful
movie posters, lobby cards and black and white still photos were
created by Hollywood's finest artists to publicize these movies.
As added promotion, the stars would autograph some of these items.
Now these items are highly prized by collectors all over the world.
Although the average collector is able to afford only one or two
of these from their favorite movies, The Flamingo Hotel has collected
over 1,000 of these for display in it's museum and hotel rooms.

Over 50 major Old West Movies were
filmed in the Tucson area from 1939 to 1979. Most of these were filmed
at
Old Tucson Studios which was one of the favorite movie locations
of the major Hollywood stars and producers including John Wayne, James
Stewart, Ronald Reagan, Kirk Douglas, Robert Mitchum, Clayton Moore
(the Lone Ranger), Glenn Ford, Paul Newman, Angie Dickinson, Clint
Eastwood and Maureen O'Hara to name a few.
Old Tucson Studios is open daily for tours of old movie sets and live
shows featuring singing and dancing, thrilling stunt shows, and reenactments
of famous "Old West" gunfights. Old Tucson Studios is the
premier attraction in Tucson and a "must see" for visitors
who want to experience the "Old West". Old Tucson is just
a short spectacular drive from our hotel and is located in a gorgeous
desert/mountain setting. Our museum has supplied a number of vintage
movie posters to Old Tucson Studios which can be seen throughout the
Studios. We offer discount coupons to Old Tucson Studios. Movie
titles included Gunfight at OK Corral, Winchester '73, Cimarron, Rio
Bravo, Rio Lobo, Mclintock, Joe Kidd, The Life and Times of Judge
Roy Bean, The Badlanders and many, many more. The Tucson area was
desired by filmmakers for its spectacular desert scenery and the authentic
"Old West" movie town built at Old Tucson Studios for the
1939 production of "Arizona" starring Jean Arthur and William
Holden. |

Tombstone,
Arizona and Our Museum
|
Tombstone
and the events there have long been a favorite movie making subject.
Our museum features a unique display of posters from nearly all of
the movies made about Wyatt Earp and the famous Gunfight at OK Corral
which occurred in Tombstone, Arizona, in the 1880's. Also featured
are posters with movies using the words "Tombstone", "Wyatt
Earp" or "OK Corral" as part of the movie title. These
various movies have starred Ronald Reagan, Randolph Scott, Kevin Costner,
Roy Rogers, Val Kilmer, Kurt Russell, Kirk Douglas and Burt Lancaster
to name a few. Tombstone is an easy drive from our hotel and a remarkable
sight, especially after you see our poster collection on that subject.
Our museum loans a portion of its poster collection, including some
spectacular rare 3 sheet posters, to the Tombstone
Western Film Festival held in July each year. |
